Harvard university was founded on Oct. 28, 1636 in New Towne (now Cambridge), Massachusetts. It is one of the Ivy League schools. The main university campus is located along the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a few miles away from downtown Boston. It was founded just 16 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. Classes at Harvard began in the summer of 1638. Its name honors Puritan priest John Harvard, who gave his library and half of his estate to the school.
